Toddler dresses

The other day while perusing the aisles at the fabric store my toddler daughter was trying her best to run wild and picked up a bolt of fabric and absolutely refused to put it back.  Kinda funny seeing a 30 pound kid holding an entire bolt of fabric, but she did it!

The fabric was blue with purples and teals with space shuttles, rocket ships, planets, stars and space men all over.  I had no idea that she had any interest in space travel, and still don't think that was it, but there was something about this fabric that she loved.

Being a pushover mom, I bought it.  Originally I thought I would make placemats out of it to sell on Etsy, but decided that since it was my little bug that picked out the fabric, she should be the one to benefit from it.  So, I made her a dress.

I'm a business woman, so of course, I made 2.  One for her, one to sell.

It came out very sweet so I whipped up another one using some vintage velvet upholstery fabric.  I only had enough fabric to make one of these and I feel like it needs a big bow or something.  I guess I need to look up some tutorials and try and learn how to make bows.

The difficulty of getting it just right
strawberry shortcakeI'm working on a Strawberry Shortcake costume in size 4T.  I am using my Strawberry Shortcake doll that my mom saved for me from my childhood as the pattern.  This little doll is only about 5.5" tall but is turning out to be a great model.  My biggest challenge so far, the fabric.  I went to every fabric store within 20 miles of my home and cannot find pink with white miniature polka dots and strawberries for her hat, green & white stripes for her tights or red on red polka dots for her dress.  I've solved the dress dilema by purchasing red cotton that had white polka dots then dying it.  I dyed it scarlet so the dots came out a slightly different shade.  Perfect.  The hat, well, I guess I'm going to either paint Strawberries on it or maybe learn to screen print.  Who knows what I'll do about the tights!
These challenges make me wonder if being such a stickler for perfection is really necessary for a costume.  I flounder back and forth with this one.  Sometimes I think I'll just skimp on these minor details, but then other times I believe that if I do that I'd be missing the whole point of doing the costume myself.  I could easily walk into a party shop and find a half-ass version of a Strawberry Shortcake costume for less.  But the point is for it to be a GOOD cosutme.  It needs to be just right.  strawberry shortcake2 so far, the apron has come out well.  I will be adding the red accents and the hearts today.  The doll's apron is connected to her dress and doesn't exist in the back at all, but being an apron maker, I just couldn't bring myself to do that.  I made it is a full apon that snaps in the back.

Insomnia is driving me crazy but keeping me productive
I love having a new project in my brain, the only bad part is that I cannot sleep.  My body is so tired and I'm ready for sleep but I lay down to rest and my brain goes into overdrive.  I design things in my sleep, create logos, establish marketing plans, anything but relax.  Of course this makes it it impossible to sleep.  I also can't stand laying in bed doing nothing when I have so many projects to do.  I don't think actual sleep is a waste of time, but I think laying in bed NOT sleeping is a waste.  So, I get up.
This was no big deal before I was a mom.  I'd just sew for days until I couldn't take it anymore.  I read an article one time about some gamers that would rig up contraptions so that they didn't have to get up from their game to pee.  I totally understand the obsession.  I've missed quite a few meals and nights of sleep working on projects in the past.
Last night I didn't want to turn on the computer and stare at a screen.  I didn't want to start a new project because I knew that would really keep me up.  So, I found something boring and monotonous to make myself tired.
I have a HUGE garbage bag full of Crown Royal bags that a friend who works in the bar business has given me so that I can make him a robe.  I'm pretty sure that alcohol was involved in this bright idea that I agreed to back in college.  However, I am totally up for the challenge and look forward to the finished product.  Only problem, it is very boring to prepare the fabric.  This is an hour and a half of cutting.

Then, I discovered that you cannot iron the fabric directly.  I didn't make a dent in the humongous bag 'o bags but now probably have enough fabric for a pillowcase.
hmmmm..... wonder if I'll have enough left over for an apron or two?

Sweet deal on eBay
I have been crafting aprons free-hand but came across a really cool reto apron pattern on eBay.  I clicked to buy it and instead of paying right away I browsed the woman's eBay store.  Glad I did too.  I didn't find anything else that I wanted, she sold a bunch of country cutesie quilter type stuff, but I remembered my eBay bucks!  Totally had almost let that slip my mind, and it wasn't much, but for a short time this summer eBay gave "eBay Bucks" for purchases that you made.  I had racked up enough eBay bucks to cover the cost of my new vintage pattern.  Sweet.

Getting the first couple of aprons up for sale
I've been more active sewing the past few days than anything else.  My house is starting to disgust me because I've spent so much time sewing that I have neglected everything else (except my baby of course... she is first).
I think I may be getting myself into trouble though because I've started about half a dozen aprons and haven't finished one yet.  I always have to be careful when I do that because sometimes I lose interest and end up with too many half finished projects.  I think I'm going to go finish some now.
I DID manage to finish a couple and even got them listed online!
I've decided to showcase them here on this site but actually sell them on my other site.  I didn't want them to be able to be purchased from two places, just showcased in two.  They seem to fit in with the stuff I sell at addictedtorockabilly anyway so I think it will work.
